China Immigration & Arrival: What to Expect Step by Step

Landing in China for the first time feels big. The airport signs are in Chinese, there are queues everywhere, and you're jet-lagged. Here's exactly what happens from the moment the plane lands to the moment you're in a taxi to your hotel — so there are no surprises.

💡 Pre-Fill Your Arrival Card Online

China now lets you fill in your Arrival Card online up to 72 hours before landing — search "中国入境健康申报" or ask your airline. Skip the paper form on the plane and go straight to immigration. Huge time-saver.

On the Plane (Before Landing)

1Flight attendants may distribute an Arrival Card (入境卡) — fill it in if given one (name, passport number, flight number, hotel address in China, purpose of visit)
2Have your hotel address in Chinese ready — immigration may ask for it
3Have your return or onward flight information accessible
4Switch your phone to the China eSIM if you have one — it activates when you land
5Keep your passport in your hand — you'll need it multiple times in the next hour

Immigration (入境检查)

1Follow signs to 入境 (Immigration) — usually very well marked in English too
2Join the 外国人 (Foreigners) queue — separate from Chinese citizens
3At the booth, hand over your passport + Arrival Card
4The officer will take your fingerprints and a photo — completely routine, don't be nervous
5If asked questions, keep answers simple: purpose = tourism (旅游 lǚ yóu) (or whatever your purpose is), duration = your planned stay
6They stamp your passport and hand it back — you're in China! YAYYY 🇨🇳

💡 What the Officer Might Ask

"What is the purpose of your visit?" → "Tourism/Business trip/Study/Visit" /
"How long will you stay?" → "[X] days"
"Where are you staying?" → Show your hotel booking on your phone

Customs Declaration (海关申报)

Up to ¥5,000 RMB cash without declaring
Up to $5,000 USD equivalent in foreign currency
Personal electronics (phone, laptop, camera)
Power banks (must be under 20,000mAh and has a 3C (CCC) sign — check yours)
Prescription medication (bring doctor's note)

Most travelers take the green "Nothing to Declare" channel. If you're unsure, use the red channel and ask — officers are helpful.

💡 Fresh Food Rule

The "no fresh food" rule is strictly enforced. That banana you were eating on the plane? Finish it or throw it away before landing. Customs dogs are excellent and fines for undeclared food items start at ¥2,000.

Baggage Claim & Arrivals Hall

1Follow signs to 行李提取 (Baggage Claim)
2Check the departure board for your flight number and belt number
3If your bag is lost or damaged: report it at the airline desk before leaving the baggage area — after you leave, claims become much harder
4Exit through customs (green or red channel) into the Arrivals Hall
5You're out! Now: ignore taxi touts (there are lots od spam), find the SIM counter if needed, then get your Didi or airport metro

⚠️ First 5 Minutes Outside Arrivals

People WILL approach you offering taxis, rides, or help with luggage. They are not official. Better say "no thanks," and keep walking. Get your phone out, open Didi, and book your ride from the official ride-hailing zone (网约车区) — all airports have one, follow the signs.
