How to Use the Metro in China

China's city metros are modern, clean, cheap, and incredibly easy to use — even if you don't speak any Mandarin. Most stations have English signs and the ticket machines have an English option. Master the metro and you'll unlock every corner of the city for ¥3–10 per trip.

How to Buy a Metro Ticket

You have three ways to pay for the metro in China. Option 2 (Alipay/WeChat QR) is fastest once you're set up:

✅ Option 1: Ticket Machine (Easiest for First Timers)

Find the ticket machine in the station — they're always near the gate
Press the English button (usually top right corner)
Select your destination from the map on screen
Choose quantity (X ticket)
Pay with cash (coins or small notes) or Alipay/WeChat QR, foreign bank cards work in some station.
Collect your token — a small round plastic disc

⚡ Option 2: Alipay or WeChat QR Code (I would recommend Alipay - the fastest and easiest)

Open Alipay → tap Transport or scan the QR reader at the gate
Select your city
A QR code appears — hold it to the scanner at the gate
Gate opens — fare is automatically deducted at exit

No ticket machine, no queuing, no tokens. This is how locals do it.(And it also works on buses)

💡 Option 3: City Transport Card

Each city has a rechargeable card (Beijing: Yikatong, Shanghai: Jiaotong Card) available at the service desk.

Navigating the Station

1Look for the 地铁 (dìtiě) sign outside — red or blue depending on city
2Security check first — put your bag through the X-ray. This is mandatory at ALL Chinese metro stations.
3Tap or scan your token/QR at the entry gate
4Find your line and direction on the overhead signs — always shown in Chinese and English
5Board the train — announcements are in Mandarin and English
6At your stop, tap out with your token (insert into the slot) or QR scan at the exit gate

⚠️ Don't Forget to Tap OUT

With Alipay, the fare is calculated at exit — you must scan when leaving. If you forget, the system charges you the maximum fare (around 15 yuan/trip).

🏙️ Beijing Metro

27 lines, 490+ stations — huge network
Line 1 and Line 10 cover most tourist sites
Airport Express: Line 10 + Airport Express (¥25, 30 min to Terminal 3)
Rush hours brutal: 7:30–9am, 5:30–7pm — avoid with luggage
App: Beijing Metro app (English available)

🌆 Shanghai Metro

20 lines, 500+ stations — one of world's largest
Line 2 connects Pudong Airport to city centre (¥7, 50 min)
Line 10 is great for the Bund and French Concession
Clean, well-signed, easiest for first-timers
App: Metro大都会 (Shanghai Metro official)

🐼 Chengdu Metro

13 lines covering the whole city
Line 10 goes directly to Tianfu Airport
Line 3 for Chunxi Road shopping and food street
Less crowded than Beijing/Shanghai
Bilingual signs throughout ✅
