The story: In 1974, farmers digging a well near Xi'an stumbled onto the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century: an underground army built around 210 BC for Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor. So far over 8,000 life-size soldiers, 130 chariots and 670 horses have been found, each warrior with a unique face โ no two are alike. The entire site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, covers 56 square kilometers.
Why it's a must-see: This is one of the world's true wonders โ a silent army that has waited 2,200 years for visitors, built by over 700,000 laborers. Pit 1 alone holds 6,000 warriors in battle formation, and the sheer scale makes you understand why the first emperor thought he could conquer death itself.
๐ก Kat's tip: Go early (opens 8:30am) and head straight to Pit 1 before the tour groups arrive. It's 1 hour from the city โ take public bus 306 (ๆธธ5) from the train station for 7 RMB, not the 200 RMB tourist bus. Allow 3โ4 hours.
