The story: The Great Wall isn't one wall but 20,000+ km of fortifications built over 2,000 years (3rd century BC to 17th century) by millions of workers. Mutianyu was first built in the Northern Qi dynasty (550 AD), then rebuilt in 1368 by Ming general Xu Da as the capital's northern shield. It's the longest fully-restored section open to visitors — 5.4 km with 23 watchtowers — and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Why it's a must-see: Of all the famous sections near Beijing, Mutianyu gives you the most wall for the fewest crowds — fewer tourists than Badaling, forested mountain views, and original Ming bricks under your feet. Cable car up, wander the watchtowers, then ride the toboggan slide down. It's the most fun you'll ever have on a World Heritage site.

💡 Kat's tip: Go early (before 9am) and avoid weekends. It's about 1.5–2 hours from central Beijing — book a day tour or take the bus from Dongzhimen hub.

The story: Built 1406–1420 by the Yongle Emperor with over a million laborers, the Forbidden City (Zijincheng, "Purple Forbidden City") was home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for nearly 500 years. It's the largest palace complex in the world: 72 hectares, 980 buildings, more than 8,700 rooms, surrounded by a 10-meter wall and a 52-meter moat. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Why it's a must-see: Commoners were once forbidden to enter — now you can walk the same stones as emperors, from the Hall of Supreme Harmony with its Dragon Throne to the serene Imperial Garden. The whole complex is built around the emperor as the center of the universe: the throne is aligned with the North Star itself.

💡 Kat's tip: Tickets sell out days ahead — book online at least 7 days in advance. Enter from the Meridian Gate (south), then exit the north gate into Jingshan Park for the classic rooftop view.

The story: At 440,000 m² (880m × 500m), Tiananmen Square is the largest city square in the world — big enough to hold 60 football fields. It sits on Beijing's historic central axis, flanked by the National Museum of China, the Great Hall of the People, and the Monument to the People's Heroes, with the Forbidden City rising directly behind it.

Why it's a must-see: Come at sunrise for the flag-raising ceremony, timed to the sun's first light each morning. Thousands of locals gather to watch — it's a daily ritual that turns an enormous concrete square into something deeply moving, and it makes China feel real rather than postcard-perfect.

💡 Kat's tip: Entry is free, but bring your passport — security checks are strict. Arrive 30 minutes early for a good view; the ceremony on the 1st of each month is bigger with a full band.

The story: Built in 1420 by the same Yongle Emperor, the Temple of Heaven is where Ming and Qing emperors came each year to pray for good harvests — the largest ritual complex of its kind in the world (273 hectares). Its layout is round in the north and square in the south, echoing the ancient belief that "heaven is round, earth is square." A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.

Why it's a must-see: The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a wooden masterpiece — built without a single nail, its blue-tiled roof held up by interlocking brackets. But the real magic is the park itself: come in the morning and you'll find locals doing tai chi, ballroom dancing, singing opera, and playing cards. It's Beijing's best free show.

💡 Kat's tip: Go early (6–9am) — that's when the park becomes the city's living room and the exercise culture is in full swing. The park opens at 6am.

The story: Built in 1750 by Emperor Qianlong (originally as a birthday gift for his mother), the Summer Palace — Yiheyuan, "Garden of Nurtured Harmony" — was rebuilt by Empress Dowager Cixi in 1888–95 after foreign forces sacked it in 1860. It's the best-preserved imperial garden in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.

Why it's a must-see: A 290-hectare landscape wrapped around Kunming Lake, with the world's longest painted corridor (728 meters, 14,000+ paintings), the Marble Boat, and the Seventeen-Arch Bridge. Take a dragon boat across the lake and you'll understand how emperors relaxed — and why they called it the "summer" palace.

💡 Kat's tip: Give it half a day. Rent a boat if the weather is fine, and stay for sunset from the Seventeen-Arch Bridge — it's worth the wait.
