The story: Yalong Bay ("Dragon Tooth Bay") is a crescent of white coral sand and shallow, calm water — widely rated the best beach in China. Mountains shelter it on three sides, and the resort strip behind the sand is where Sanya's luxury hotels line up like pearls. Locals say the sand here squeaks under your feet because it's almost pure ground coral.

Why it's a must-see: If you came to Sanya for a beach, this is the beach. The water is clear enough to see your toes, the sunsets are long and gold, and even the most expensive hotels can't stop you walking their shoreline — in China, all beaches are public.

Its centerpiece is the Guanyin of the South Sea: a 108-meter-tall, three-faced statue of the Goddess of Mercy standing on an island in the bay — one of the tallest statues on Earth, visible from kilometers away.

Why it's a must-see: It's genuinely awe-inspiring — a colossal white figure rising from the ocean that feels ancient even though it was completed in 2005. The park around it has temple halls, a vegetarian restaurant run by monks, and the "Dragon Boat" beach. Plan for a relaxed half-day.

It's the island's nearest neighbor to the famed "Mermaid" diving spots.

Why it's a must-see: This is where you come for the water: snorkeling, scuba diving, jet-skiing, and a glass-bottom boat over the reef. Even if you just want to swim, the beach here is dramatically prettier than the mainland bays.

The story: "Tianya Haijiao" literally means "sky's edge, sea's corner" — the old Chinese phrase for the end of the world. For centuries, this rocky stretch of coast was where exiled officials came to die, far from the capital's politics. Later the boulders engraved with "Tianya" and "Haijiao" became China's most romantic symbol: lovers come here to pledge that they will follow each other "to the ends of the earth."

Why it's a must-see: The coastline is dramatic — weathered granite boulders, coconut palms, and waves crashing against black rock. It's also where Chinese TV taught generations to dream of Hainan. Sunset from the rocks is the classic Sanya photo.

The story: Dadonghai — "Big East Sea" — is the beach that put Sanya on the map in the 1980s, right in the city itself. It's the friendliest beach in Sanya: sun loungers, banana-boat rides, kite surfers, and families flying kites until the streetlights come on.

Why it's a must-see: It's the most accessible slice of the tropical life — walk out of your hotel, cross the road, and you're on the sand. The evening scene is unbeatable: locals playing volleyball in the shallows, seafood grill stalls lighting up, and beach bars with the music turned toward the waves.
