The story: In the 19th century, after the Opium Wars, foreign traders and missionaries settled on Gulangyu, a small island a 5-minute ferry from Xiamen. They built hundreds of villas β British, French, Dutch, Japanese β alongside the local Fujian style, creating what UNESCO calls "the most complete and authentic example of Sino-foreign architecture in the world." The island also became China's piano capital; nearly every family owned one.
Why it's a must-see: It's a car-free, traffic-light-free world of narrow lanes, hibiscus-covered walls, and sea views at every turn. Climb Sunlight Rock for the panorama, wander past the restored villas of the old foreign quarter, and visit the world's only piano museum. It's touristy, but it's genuinely beautiful.
π‘ Kat's tip: Book ferry tickets online days ahead β same-day slots sell out. Go early morning, or better, stay overnight on the island after 6pm when the day-trippers vanish and the lanes belong to the cats.
