The story: Built in 1509 by a retired Ming dynasty official, the Humble Administrator's Garden is the largest and most famous classical garden in Suzhou. The story: Pingjiang Road is a stone-paved street running alongside a canal for over a kilometer, and it has been Suzhou's liveliest quarter since the Southern Song dynasty. Whitewashed houses crowd the water, stone bridges arch every hundred meters, and the old names of lanes — "Button Lane," "Willow Lane" — reveal the trades that once lived here.

Why it's a must-see: It's the most atmospheric slice of old Suzhou and completely free. Follow it slowly: duck-egg sellers, guqin players in teahouses, silk handicraft stalls, and tiny garden courtyards hidden behind half-open doors.

💡 Kat's tip: Come at dusk — the lanterns come on and the crowds thin out. Take a 40-minute boat ride on the canal for a different angle. The eastern end is quieter than the tourist-heavy southern section.

The story: Legend says a tiger guarded the tomb of King Helü of Wu here in 496 BC, and for a thousand years the Yunyan Pagoda at the hill's summit has been slowly leaning — today it tilts about 3 degrees, earning the nickname "China's Leaning Tower of Pisa." Nobody is quite sure why it hasn't fallen, which is part of the fun.

Why it's a must-see: "If you haven't been to Tiger Hill, you haven't been to Suzhou," goes the local saying. The hill is a pleasant park of gardens, stone carvings, and a sword-pool well where Helü's weapons were supposedly sunk — plus the leaning pagoda, which you can't photograph without tilting your head.

The story: Tongli is a water town that predates the Ming dynasty, built on five lakes with fifteen rivers threaded through its lanes. Locals still live their lives over the water — deliveries by boat, washing at the canal steps, and stone bridges with names like "Long Peace" and "Great Wealth" carrying daily traffic.

Why it's a must-see: It's the perfect day trip from Suzhou (about 40 minutes by metro and bus, or a quick taxi). Unlike the more touristed Zhouzhuang, Tongli feels lived-in. The Retreat and Reflection Garden, a UNESCO-listed garden, is hidden inside an ordinary-looking house.
