Kunming

The story: The Stone Forest is a 270-million-year-old karst landscape of grey limestone pillars, caves, and underground rivers. Once an ancient seabed, tectonic shifts lifted the stone and water carved it into the maze you see today. The local Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic group, have legends that say the stones were once a girl turned to stone while waiting for her lover.

Why it's a must-see: It's the single most famous day trip from Kunming and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can wander narrow passages between towers up to 30 meters tall, visit a traditional Sani village, and catch minority song-and-dance performances. It's touristy but genuinely spectacular.

It's a 20-minute taxi ride from downtown and a great place to catch sunset.

The banks are lined with willows and teahouses, and the central pavilions host musicians, dancers, and retirees playing mahjong almost every day of the week.

Why it's a must-see: This is where Kunming comes to breathe. Morning tai chi, elderly couples dancing to old songs, and parents showing kids how to feed gulls — it's the city's living room. Best of all, it's completely free and right in the city center.

The story: Yunnan is home to 25 of China's 56 recognized ethnic minorities, and this open-air museum attempts to introduce visitors to as many as possible. Each village is built in traditional style — Dai bamboo houses, Bai marble courtyards, Tibetan prayer wheels — and staffed by people from those communities.

Why it's a must-see: It's a little theme-park-ish, but if you only have a day in Kunming and want a crash course in Yunnan's ethnic diversity, this is the easiest place to do it. The dance shows are lively, and the lakeside setting makes for pleasant walking.

The story: Dounan Flower Market is the largest fresh-cut flower trading center in Asia. More than 70% of China's cut flowers pass through here, and the market operates like a stock exchange — prices flash on screens and roses, lilies, and carnations move by the truckload.

Why it's a must-see: Even if you don't buy anything, the sensory overload is unforgettable: rooms filled with roses, hallways of dried flowers, and bouquets wrapped at lightning speed. It's also the cheapest place on Earth to feel like you should buy 100 roses.

💡 Kat's tip: The real action happens after 8pm, when wholesale buyers arrive. Visit the main trading hall late evening for the full chaos. It's about 30 minutes from downtown by metro — take Line 1 to Dounan Station.
