Chongqing

Cyberpunk city, hotpot capital, mountain drama

โœจ Why Chongqing?

Chongqing is China's most surreal city โ€” a mega-city of 32 million people built on mountains where two rivers meet, and the trains run through apartment buildings. Photographers call it cyberpunk: buildings stacked on buildings, neon-lit bridges layered over the Yangtze, and an elevator ride that feels like a mountain hike.

It's also the birthplace of Chinese hotpot โ€” the original, dangerously spicy broth โ€” and it's famous for one of China's friendliest street-food scenes. Come for the impossible architecture, stay for the food, and leave wondering how any of it was built.

๐Ÿ› Where to Stay

Pick the right district and half your trip is planned. These are the bases locals actually recommend for visitors.

Jiefangbei CBD Best for first-timers

Chongqing's center: the Liberation Monument, shopping, the metro hub and Hongya Cave are all within walking distance (or a 10-minute taxi). Everything on your list is 15โ€“30 minutes away by metro or taxi.

๐Ÿš‡ Lines 1/2/6 ยท Xiaoshizi / Jiefangbei ๐Ÿ› Jiefangbei, Hongya Cave, Yangtze cable car
e.g. Niccolo Chongqing (sky-high luxury in IFS Tower) ยท JI Hotel (great value near Jiefangbei)
Nanbin Road (South Bank) Skyline views

Across the Yangtze, the Nanbin Road waterfront looks directly at the downtown skyline โ€” the best night views in the city, plus riverside restaurants and bars. Slightly less convenient, considerably more romantic.

๐Ÿš‡ Line 6/็Žฏ็บฟ ยท Nanbin Road ๐Ÿ› Yangtze cable car, Danzishi old street
e.g. Chongqing Marriott (river-view rooms) ยท mid-range riverside hotels
Guanyinqiao Foodies & shoppers

Chongqing's second downtown and unofficial food capital: the Guanyinqiao night market and the surrounding streets hold some of the city's best hotpot and snacks, with direct metro access to the center in 15 minutes.

๐Ÿš‡ Lines 3/9 ยท Guanyinqiao ๐Ÿ› Guanyinqiao night market, 9 Streets food alley
e.g. Holiday Inn Express ยท local chains (very good value)
Ciqikou area Old-town atmosphere

Stay near the ancient town for riverside teahouses and cliff paths in the morning before the crowds. It's a 30โ€“40 minute metro ride to the CBD, but you wake up in old Chongqing.

๐Ÿš‡ Line 1 ยท Ciqikou ๐Ÿ› Ciqikou old town, Jialing River
e.g. boutique guesthouses near the old town gate

๐Ÿ’ก Kat's Insider Tips

Kat Says
Chongqing is built on mountains โ€” you WILL get lost. Google Maps doesn't work well here; use Amap (้ซ˜ๅพท) or Baidu Maps, and remember that 'two blocks away' might mean a 20-story climb.
Kat Says
The Yangtze River cable car (2 RMB) across the river is a working commuter line, not a tourist ride โ€” do it at sunset for the best skyline approach.
Kat Says
Order hotpot with 'weila' (ๅพฎ่พฃ) if you're not a spice veteran, and always get the sesame-oil dip โ€” it's not optional, it's survival.
